When I learned that David Revoy had almost stopped making Paper & Carrot, and that a significant part of the reason for that was that he could no longer with good conscience recommend to professional artists to use Linux, partly because Wayland broke too much, that drove home just how much damage Wayland is doing right now.

Users are lost, it doesn't work, and with "the end of Windows 10", I get daily request about it. I published a detailed install guide to address this.

Tools that just worked don’t work anymore after you update something else -- that’s textbook volatile infrastructure ☹

Consider that switching from a now broken application to one that works means re-training people. Yes, we usually do that "as a hobby", but to consider the time that actually takes away from people’s lives, try to think about is as an employer: paying a person to take a one hour tutorial to understand how to map their requirements to new software takes 30 to 200 Euro. Per person. And 30 Euro is for cheapskate exploitative employers.

If even paid devs at major companies have problems, consider what that means for existing tools by hobbyists.

Wayland forces people to change the implementation in mature software and then Wayland fans blame the mature software that the new implementation isn’t as solid as the one that Wayland broke.

And the Wayland approach sounds again like implementing roundabout workarounds for things that are trivial on the Hurd. In 2021 I wrote a deferred authorization translator for the Hurd that can request permission via a simple unix socket to temporarily add a group to an application when that application wants to access a filesystem node (like a capture device). For the remote desktop case: grant the remote party permission (by connecting to a unix socket) to grant applications remote access permissions for a limited amount of time. It took less than 200 LoC (though getting those to work well took quite some time).

To at least reduce the damage, Wayland could allow package-manager-installed Free Software to capture, because it can be assumed to be trusted. We’re crippling Free Software, because proprietary can’t be trusted …

As was to be expected, in the comments many people say “I don’t see problems” and “for me it works”, as if that had ever proven the absence of problems.

Update from discussions: At work we recently had “can someone else share, my distro switched to wayland and it doesn’t work anymore”.

Luckily that wasn’t a presentation and others could take over.

My distro switched the default to Wayland about a year ago and I had to switch back, because that doesn’t work at all with EXWM. To which I switched, because at some point at work Gnome annoyed me too much.

I had hoped Wayland would be better, but at this point I wish it had been abandoned a decade ago.

I think the core problem is that they thought they’d change things and then every program using Xorg would be adapted by others.

The same mistake Python made with the 2->3 transition.

A fact is that in Free Software most programs have up to one maintainer.

They work and solve real problems, but they are in “if something breaks, someone provides a patch and a new bugfix version gets released” mode -- that’s for the ones that aren’t maintained via distro-specific patches.

The Wayland developers expect applications to adapt to the new way of doing things. With the assumption that that would be easy.

KDE and Gnome both tried to chip in for tools using kde libs and gnome libs, but all the independent tools are left out. Independent tools are the ones that used to work for everyone.

And I personally think that the Wayland devs massively underestimated the complexity of mature multimedia programs.

Pulseaudio broke Audacity, now Wayland broke OBS: those infrastructure changes hit mature apps the worst.

(Audacity by now mostly recovered from the pulseaudio-induced breakage -- a decade after that breakage I could finally use it to record with my USB pre-amp again)

What the Wayland-by-default Linux Distros did is to expose all their users to the Wayland bugs -- and Wayland fans now say: if you use a no longer working application, just use a different application, because it’s a problem of the application.

But Wayland caused the problem.

And maintenance load like the load Wayland puts on other Free Software developers is a major contributor to FOSS dev burnout.

Aside: Yes, there have been recent improvements on Wayland -- you can read up on that in the blog of dudemanguy, an mpv contributor.

For every user who writes a bug report, many more got impacted by the bug and didn’t act, either because of no time or because of “someone else will fix it”.

In a free software project I maintain we lost over 60% of the users because we had a problem with Windows threading that caused a slowdown of the computer (who would have imagined that putting the threads to “background” would not reduce the system load but actually put the CPU into perpetual 100% load after a few hours of runtime?). Fixed a month after it got reported (none of the core devs use Windows …) but the users never came back.

IIRC about 3 people reported it. The other 7000 who stopped just dropped out silently.

So be thankful of every user who reports a bug. They are the ones who have your back.

I am also not be perfect in that. It’s always hard to re-prioritize my free time when a bug comes in, because it means I can’t work on the thing I actually want to improve. But I’m working on it …

So einfach ist die Psyche leider nicht.

Und Leuten, die 70 Stunden arbeiten (viele Selbstständige, Youtuber, …) fällt es oft sehr schwer, das zu verstehen: ein blinder Fleck, weil wer etwas erlebt hat, das dieses Verständnis bringt, den Job zumindest in der Zeit nicht machen konnte und dadurch oft ganz raus ist.

Lass dir nie von Leuten vorschreiben, wie viel du zu leisten hast, die noch keinen Burnout hatten.

Disziplin ist nicht nur eine Frage des Wollens, und etwas zu wollen ist ein Wert, den Viele erst erkennen, wenn er ihnen abhanden kommt.

Ein Freund von mir hatte Burnout. Er hat mir letztens gesagt, dass er kurz nach dem Burnout nicht glaubte, je wieder arbeiten zu können. Durch Unterstützung des Arbeitgebers und der Familie arbeitet er inzwischen wieder 32 Stunden die Woche. Sogar im gleichen Job. Es hat aber mehrere Jahre gedauert, wieder auf den Damm zu kommen.

Und dass da der Arbeitgeber helfen muss, damit das klappen kann, ist ein Unding. Ich glaube es liegt mit daran, dass Verständnis fehlt.

Ein Arzt sagte z.B. vor einem halben Jahr aus dem nichts zu mir, er glaube nicht an Burnout …

Und nein: Abnehmspritzen sind dafür keine Lösung.

If EU actually gets this right, I could allow my kids more games.

Currently -- with very few exceptions -- “has ingame transactions” is a hard no-go, so they miss out on a lot of games they would like to play.

Also it could free game developers from having to waste their creative energy on treacherous features that they know hurt users, possibly saving a ton of game devs from the burnout they risk whenever they can no longer blind out that their work is a net negative to almost all involved.

And it could make games safe again for people who suffer from gambling addiction.

So I welcome the EU taking up the task of fixing that.

And damn: I missed the call for public consultation (closed Oct 24th).

So übel ich Merz in vielem finde, er hat doch eine Menschlichkeit, die denen abgeht, die in den Kommentaren des Videos über ihn herziehen.

Wer bei diesem Video gegen Merz hetzt, während er Gefühle zeigt, ist wie ein Friedensaktivist, der Schröder dafür hasst, beim Irakkrieg nicht mitgemacht zu haben.

Gebt nie Differenzierung und Menschlichkeit auf, nur weil jemand auf der falschen Seite steht. Selbst -- und gerade -- wenn es schwer fällt.

They give 20% of their income to shareholders instead of game development. That’s 20% of employees missing from development teams. They have 13000 employees, so with those dividends alone, they could staff Larian (450+ employees) five times.

Zu Volksverpetzer-Video: Warum spricht niemand über diesen Beschluss?!

1. Potenzialität: hat die AfD bei genug Prozenten für 120 Millionen an Staatsfinanzierung auf jeden Fall.

Die Ausrede von Compact, sie wollten das ja gar nicht, zieht also bei der AfD nicht.
